Proceedings from the International Congress on Language Learning
Edited by Lonna Dickerson

The two volumes on this CD-ROM contain almost 600 pages of relevant insights and practical suggestions for those who work with pre-field and on-field language and culture learners. Representing the views of a broad spectrum of specialists in the field, each of the papers has a single overarching goal—to help learners develop the proficiency they need in order to communicate more effectively in their new languages and cultures.

Volume I: Helping the Missionary Language Learner Succeed

Available only on this CD-ROM, the 21 papers in this volume were first presented at the International Congress on Language Learning which met in August, 1993, in Colorado Springs. Topics include principles that promote successful language learning, design of on-field language and culture-learning programs, approaches for fostering strong motivation and commitment, psychological issues facing new learners, and several papers on pre-field and on-field learner training.

Volume II: Helping Learners Develop Second Language Proficiency

This second volume of Congress papers, also available as a softcover book, consists of 20 papers from the second Congress (October, 1995) and the third Congress (October, 1998), each meeting in Colorado Springs. It offers practical help in dealing with issues such as expanding the role of the language learning facilitator, gleaning insights from research to improve field-based learning, fostering appropriate learner attitudes, helping learners make the most of their individual learning styles and preferences, equipping learners with a repertoire of communicative activities, and assessing the learners’ ability to use the language in real-life situations.
