This week-long workshop is designed
to teach member care and personnel professionals the vital
aspects of effective debriefing and renewal for cross-cultural
workers and their families who are returning to their country
of origin. CODAR trains facilitators how to guide personal
debriefing and renewal as a routine part of any missionary’s
on-going development - versus attending only to those who
have experienced extreme trauma or who are low functioning
upon their return.
Why have such a ‘Consultation’ (purpose)?
North Americans ministering cross-culturally
are experiencing a dramatic increase in hardships, persecution
and adjustments. The combined experiences during just one
assignment overseas, if left unprocessed, can be paralyzing
or disorienting – leading to future ineffectiveness
and a deep sense of dissatisfaction. Yet the felt-need and
priority of personal debriefing is quite low among most sending
agencies and missionaries. This consultation is initiated
in hopes of training multiple facilitators to serve the thousands
of missionaries who are currently receiving inadequate or
no personal debriefing.
Who should attend?
If you work in a member care or personnel department
or as a counselor and plan to offer debriefing, this consultation
is a MUST. You will be equipped to help those returning from
foreign fields of service to process their past experiences
and renew the focus of their future – as well as prepare
them for other kinds of debriefing such as relational,
team or organizational debriefing.
What are some of the topics covered?
- Preparing your heart as a facilitator to
debrief others
- Creating a safe environment and relationship
- Eliciting the stories and experiences of
others
- Validating skills
- Normalizing skills
- Spiritual Renewal skills for those who are
weary warriors
Who are the Facilitators of this Consultation?
The facilitators of this consultation have more
than 70 years of combined experience with individual and group
debriefing. Each have been facilitators of missionary debriefings
that include some of the most stressful, traumatic and toxic
experiences. Dr. John Powell, the co-founder of the Mental
Health and Missions Conference and one of the fathers of the
missions member care movement, will be joined by Ruth Ann
Graybill, consultant to numerous mission agencies on both
normal and crisis debriefing, and Dr. Steve Sweatman, President
of Mission Training International.
