“This program has completely reconfigured my approach to language learning, challenging me beyond the traditional approach to focus on comprehension. They have encouraged me to know the people and their culture, making them my own. I’m not only taking ownership of my language learning, but of the people themselves.”
“I appreciated how the phonetics drills have helped me identify such a variety of sounds and appreciated the language helpers practice sessions. I have a variety of new tools in my toolbox which builds my confidence in becoming a better speaker. Not only do my hands have tools but my ears have been ‘retooled’ to hear correctly helping me speak correctly.”
“I will have limited language school options. This course has given me a practical approach that I have seen first-hand! I really appreciate how hands-on the course is.”
“This program is not all lecture, but is very interactive and community building. We learned as much from each other as anyone in our Growth Groups, small group discussion, interactive feedback in class. It was very personal, focusing on families and singles, hands on simulations, and not just talking about Sabbath, but doing it!”
“The entire program has been amazing to me. I have loved the modules – the ones that were the most memorable were the chaos bridge, talk on twangs, the challenge to Go Deep and the module on transition. After being on the field as a short-term worker, it was so refreshing and beneficial to hear that I was not ‘weird’ or ‘wrong’ when feeling like I was in chaos.”
“We are eternally grateful for all that was shared at our training. We have moved into a VERY HIGH CONTEXT culture and think often about the simulation that highlighted that point. We encounter things on a daily basis that ‘everybody knows’ and find it to be much less frustrating than we normally would – because we were made aware that we see things from our frame of reference – what’s normal , natural, right, and good. I find myself constantly rehearsing these principles to myself.”
If you’ve already registered for Compass, here are some things you may need to know.
Your Compass program will be held at MTI’s beautiful training center in the small town of Palmer Lake, nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, just north of Colorado Springs.
Classes are held Monday-Friday from 8:45am to 4:00pm plus the last Saturday until noon. This four-week program begins on Monday with orientation at 4:00pm and ends on the fourth Saturday with lunch. There is no program in the evenings. Evenings are a good time to rest and process your training with family members and others in the Compass program (holiday schedules may apply).
You’ll find that MTI is a learning community. Class time is extremely important, emphasizing application and integration. Time outside of class is also valuable as you interact in group discussions, informal chats, sports, and outings. You’ll find commonality with each other as you share your background, training, and experiences.
